Kelly has managed to turn her small blog into a highly recognised and informative Interiors wonderland within this competitive industry.

Her savy business skills, entreprenual talent and her natural interior design flair as made The KJ Collective a household name. Well known in the media, Kelly has also managed to keep her feet firmly on the ground and has remained a geniune, approachable and all round lovely person to talk too.

I love Kelly's colourful modern classic style and her coastal home is amazing. Read on to discover more about the powerhouse that is The KJ Collective and why you should be following her every move..

Tell us a little more about you, your background and your family etc?

I'm one of three siblings & Melbourne native. Growing up we spent family holidays at Anglesea, on the west coast of Victoria....I can't get enough of the place, it's beach all the way for our family ! My husband, Braydan & I have 2 boys, Wes & Max.....they certainly keep us busy & we try to get down the beach as much as we can to relax on the weekends.

I'm grateful for the wonderful support & encouragement by my family, they're great! ( I do drive them slightly crazy moving things around the home constantly too! )

As far as career goes, I have worked our family business in one form or another my whole life, a national plumbing & kitchen retailer to the building industry...I loved it, building is in my blood! I've have a Degree in Business, which I gained whilst I worked full time, took a bit of time off with each of my kids...& then back to it!!

Working in a family business has to one of the most rewarding experiences of my life!

I started 'The KJ Collective' a few years ago, as a way to showcase & share my love of interiors, art, styling & sharing unique finds. I have always been a 'go to' person for interiors advice for family & friends, I saw this as a natural addition to compliment working in our family business.

Can you explain a little about what The KJ Collective offers?

'The KJ Collective' offers 'interiors inspiration' to my readers as well as a growing platform for creative business to showcase their products through my blog & IG.

I love to feature upcoming brands as well as more established ones we all love .... prioritising on keeping my feed fresh & inspiring.

I really love styling up areas within my home with new & exciting products.

I also offer an private decorating & sourcing service, helping clients with my 'little black book' of suppliers.

What was the inspiration behind creating The KJ Collective and why this name?

I brainstormed my business for a little while before I came up with my name...THE K J COLLECTIVE!

I wanted a name which covered a lot of different areas allowing my brand to grow & develop over time with a broad scope & little restrictions....I believed a word such as 'collective' was perfect.

( KJ - aka Kelly - Jayne....)

What challenges did you face in the early days growing the business and how did you overcome them if any?

Like any new business, it's about starting and having the courage to actually start, I'd talked about it for a long time. Being recognised for your work, knowledge and passion, it all takes time.

Embracing the technology available at my fingertips was also a challenge, mainly due to lack of time, as well as developing my own branding with amazing creatives. I outsourced where I could but still wanted to take the time to understand the process.

I'm very driven & have overcame a lot of challenges by planning, listening, talking to mentors about my ideas....& having a lot of patience! That's hard when you want things yesterday ...

What have been the highlights of The KJ Collective? What are you the most proud of?

I've had a few Editorials in print ....what a buzz that is!

I've also been asked to be 'guest editor' on a number of websites including, Adairs, Shoptrawl & attended events as a guest of 'Inside Out' magazine to write a blog feature ...that was fantastic! I also worked closely with Kreo Home on the launch of her 'local is the new black campaign', blogging about local creatives

I have also met some incredibly talented people following my journey, some who have become great friends, they get it & they get me! I'm really grateful !

I'm often being asked for my advice from businesses large and small to which I play a mentoring role. Being able to bring my business experience & knowledge to an industry I love is a dream come true!

My photos & styling has been featured in the glossy pages of 'Home Beautiful' & 'Inside Out' Magazine ...such a thrill.

Below is a styling session from The Wild Collective and Kelly's home featured in GT Magazine as part of the Geelong Advertiser

Kelly featured below as Adairs Style Editor

You’ve got a great social media following. I absoluty love bespoke design! Quality not quantity.

I'm building a new home at the moment and have designed it around mid century theme with a modern twist....what an experience that has been, I've loved it!

What would be your top 3 next big interior design trends we should look out for?

Marble - This isn't going anywhere! We will continue to see it in our homes in a large format ( kitchens & bathrooms ) & I'm loving the amazing homewares around at the moment too.

Modern Gyspy - I love the 'Modern Gypsy / Boho' feel at the moment, I'm seeing a lot of stunning cushions with fun fringing, tassels & pom poms! It brings such warmth into modern interiors.

Photographic Art - Photographic art is making a strong resurgence into the interiors area & I'm loving the diversity in subject matter that I am seeing across IG particularly.

Do you have a favourite quote or inspirational mantra that you love and if so what is it?

Ohh how I love a good quote, there are probably too many to mention....but an old time favourite is 'Do it once & do it well!'.

Thanks for having me onboard Emma!

A big thank you Kelly for taking the time to have a quick chat. Her relaxed boho vibe is contagious and her decorating style is simply amazing.

I think this is just the beginning for Jessi and Dreamcatcher Designs so read on below to find out how it all started...

Tell us a little about yourself, background and family?

I was born and bred in Southern Sydney and have spent all of my life there except for 2 years where I lived in the Eastern Suburbs with my partner, Adam. We are now back living in Southern Sydney renting a beautiful sun-drenched house on the Georges River and are preparing to buy our first home here. My parents live 5 minutes down the road in the house I was born in and I see them almost every day. I have actually employed my mum to help me with my macramé orders when things get a little hectic! She is a gun at it and actually taught me most of what I know!

What was the motivation to create Dreamcatcher Designs?

I came up with the concept for Dreamcatcher Designs whilst I was studying Interior Styling at ISCD. I was pretty over working a typical office desk job and wanted a healthier lifestyle where I was up away from the computer for a decent portion of my day and using my brain more creatively. I initially intended for the business to be purely an Interior Styling company but it unexpectedly evolved quite differently for me. I began making macramé plant hangers and wall hangings as a hobby and people were showing a lot of interest in purchasing them from me so I set up an Etsy store and it all rolled out organically from there!

What do you enjoy the most about running Dreamcatcher Designs? Any challenges you have had to overcome?

I love that I am creating something with my hands that people want to buy and showcase in their homes – it’s very rewarding! I also love the freedom that comes with working for yourself – naturally! As for the challenges… there have been many and they are constantly changing as my business grows. Everything from sourcing consistent and quality materials through to business negotiations – it’s all a learning curve and definitely character building!

Where does the inspiration come from for your designs?

I find a lot of inspiration from nature – specifically colours and textures. I also draw inspiration from the fashion and interiors industry in terms of trends to ensure my products stay relevant despite the retro origins of macramé!

Have you always been creative?

I have been into arts and crafts since childhood and have been quite musical my whole life too. My favourite subjects at school were drama and music and even since school I have always worked in creative industries like fashion and interiors.

What is a typical day like running Dreamcatcher Designs?

It’s busy but relaxed – if that makes sense!? There are always orders to be made, sent, quoted or processed but working from the comfort of your home barefoot with the music turned up makes it all a little more fun!

What advice would you give to those wanting to start their own creative business?

Just do it! (Please don’t sue me, Nike!) I kind of just decided I needed a change, chose my path and threw myself into the deep end and worked it out as I went. It was by no means easy, but it did come together quite organically which helped me stay motivated as all signs were telling me I was heading in the right direction. One thing I will say is to get yourself some work experience with aspirational people and companies - you probably won’t get paid in cash but the experience is priceless! The money will come later.

Where would you like to see Dreamcatcher Designs in the future?

I would like to see some custom works in stores like Anthropologie, Free People and Urban Outfitters! I would also love to go back to basics and nurture the Interior Styling aspect of my business which was my original plan all along!

How would you describe your own personal interior styling style?

Coastal Bohemian with a playful twist

If you could travel anywhere in the world where would it be and why?

Morocco for the rugs and textiles!!

Name 2 inspirational people that you admire and why?

Sibella Court – she is a stylist, a designer, an author and a shop owner. She does it all and does it well!

Ricky Gervais – random I know. He is just such an honest and hilarious risk taker and uses his fame and status for the greater good and to spread awareness on important issues. His dangerous sense of humor is something I can definitely relate to (I can often cross the line for the sake of a joke but luckily it gets me a laugh – most of the time).

Just want to say a big thank you Jessi for letting us know a bit more about you and Dreamcatcher Designs. Gemma and family are the nicest, wackiest people you could ever deal with. I mean that in the nicest way possible Gemma! In an industry that can be quite pretentious, it is so refreshing to work with geniune, honest and inspiring people.

I love their products but then anything natural, wood, and stone floats my boat. They were a bit hesitant when releasing their latest product the Stone and Wood Prints and wondered whether the concept would fly. Well.. it flew to the Moon and back that's for sure and why wouldn't it. Read on the find out more about this melbourne based duo and what it takes to become number one in your field....

Tell us a little about your background, family and life?

Ahh, ok. First and foremost, I am the Mum to two sparky, sunshiny little girls, aged 13 months and 2-and-a-half. They are very much loved, exhausting, funny, and the reason for all things.

I'm also the wife to an incredible man, who started off as my encouraging cheer leader, and has now well and truly wound up a partner in Arlo & Co. I run things by him, take business advice from him, admire him - and we now work together each night into the wee hours creating, packing, and building this little dream of mine, that has now become ours.

Before babes came along, I travelled a lot, slept in a lot, and wrote a lot. I worked as a primary school teacher and loved it. I'm very much a people person and so the opportunity to connect with - and create cool experiences for - pre-teen kids, was great. Interestingly, in the Insta-small-biz world, I come across teachers again and again. Teachers are an essentially creative and collaborative bunch, so I guess it's not surprising. Networking and connecting is in my bones. I ask too many questions, I think too much, and I like people. So shoot me.

Where did the name Arlo & Co originate from?

Those two little girls I mentioned? Well, each of them would have been Arlo (I think!) had they been boys. But alas, it wasn't to be. So, shop name it became instead. :)

Was it scary to start your own business and what advice can you offer others in the same position starting out?

I totally appreciate that starting your own business has potential to be a daunting and, yep, scary. For me though, that idea didn't really dawn on me until I was well and truly up and running. In the beginning, I didn't think about the notion that I was 'starting a business'. That may sound completely crazy - but Arlo & Co was something that I just fell in to, as a result of making what I wanted to exist and couldn't find elsewhere, and then being encouraged to share it with others. There were no grand plans, and almost zero expectations. My advice is simple: start somewhere, start small, and be totally open to learning and adjusting as you go.

It's a risk though, no doubt. And in the social-media-creative-maker business world - which is where I've landed - you have to be ok with putting yourself out there, in the hope that others will connect with you work, and love what you're doing. The best gift you can give yourself and your business, is the confidence to trust that they will.

Do you have a favourite product at the moment and what is your best seller?

Ha! If I told you that I'd have to kill you. ;) Seriously, though, our top sellers, and my personal favourites, change all the time. We find that people tend to come onto our site in search of one thing in particular, and leave with a bunch of other pieces.

What I love about our range is it's diversity and I really hope there is something for everyone. I do have a huge soft spot for our stone and wood prints. Doing their quality and texture justice through the lens of a camera is a huge challenge!

What have been the highlights of Arlo & Co so far?

Having people choose something you've designed and made - to enrich their home - is a huge thrill. It's a simple, predictable answer, but I'm not sure there is anything that can beat that.

Other than that? People. Two years ago I would have never believed that such strong friendships could be formed with people you've never met. But I was so wrong. I've been lucky to have had the opportunity to surround myself with, and collaborate with, the most amazing group of creatives who are encouraging, giving, and humble. They make the online small biz world a great place to be.

You are a major player on social media, any tips for us on how to promote our businesses effectively?

Oh gosh! Ha - I'm just a Mum, usually with paint in my hair and a baby on my hip. But the biggest advice I can offer is to be kind and courageous, and smart. In truth, I make it up as I go, and only know the common sense stuff when it comes to social media marketing: be real, work out who your customers are and what they might be interested in. And then give them that.

In the social media world, it's inevitable that you'll have good days and not-so-good days. You will have competitors - some will be threatened, others will be embracing. Shake off the negative, embrace the good, and take opportunities as they come up. Competitions can be really effective in expanding your audience in the beginning, and not limiting yourself to only one social media platform is also handy.

Above all, just focus on doing what you do. Encouraging others, making connections and keeping your tone positive and genuine are the most effective strategies I can think of, long term. Staying authentic and approachable and humble may be the hot cliché at the minute, but it is important. And if your business is still little, and you're just beginning, remember that ALL of us were there once, too. Keep going!

How would you describe your own personal interior style?

Ah! So, a brainless Facebook-style survey I completed the other week, came up with 'Californian Eclectic', I think. Whatever that is. But really, my preferences and style loves change ALL the time. Instagram and Pinterest in particular hold a wealth of inspiration and wow - and so I am constantly changing my mind about what I love. I am the world's most indecisive person. I want it all.

But, if it helps, our home is full of greenery, weaves, texture, white walls, and wood - and lots of art and typography. All purchased with grand plans, mind you, and all not-yet-quite styled how I'd like them. We're into comfort and warmth and art and clean - but I also live with toddlers. Gah - the dilemma! I don't know if that answers the question, but that's as much as I know. :)

If you were not running Arlo & Co, what would be your dream job?

Oh I have no idea! There are two million answers to that question. Anything with people; anything creative. Teaching, learning, exploring, connecting, creating - that's what makes me excited. If there is a job opportunity out there that combines travel, interiors, learning, people, cultural variety, flexible hours, and design - I'll take it!

What would be your favourite inspirational saying and why?

Ok, so I'm not even sure if this classifies as inspirational, but here's what popped into my head straight up:

Fill what's empty, empty what's full, and scratch where it itches. - Wallis Simpson.

A big fat thank you Gemma for taking the time out of your ridiculously busy schedule to chat to me. Living on the central coast of Australia with two young girls, Bek juggles motherhood and her creative pursuits with a passion for all that is colour and with a distinct uniqueness.

I first became familiar with Bek's work when it was highlighted to me on Instagram. I will admit that a stick man is about the pinnacle of my drawing/artistic talent which is why I am in awe of Bek's abstract paintings and detailed illustrations.

Bek Halliday art is fast becoming recognised throughout the art and interiors world and that comes as no surpirse to me. Read on to find out a little more about this talent and down to earth artist..

Tell us a little about your background and your life?

I’m happily married to an exceptionally supportive man and the love of my life. We married quite young, I was 22 and next year is our 10 year wedding anniversary which is just crazy thinking about it! We have been blessed with two gorgeous little girls who I am grateful for every day. We live in a coastal town in Australia and we love it. I have to live near the beach.

Have you always been the creative type and interested in art?

I have always been creating something since I was a kid, so it’s always been a part of who I am. It’s kind of like my release, painting relaxes me and lets me just get lost in the moment.

When was Bek Halliday Art started and did you face any challenges or hurdles along the way?

I come from a background in Homewares, Fashion and Visual Merchandising and studied Fine Art when I left school, but it wasn’t until I was pregnant with my second child that I felt a sudden urge and desperate need to return to art. She’s a wise little soul! I call her my angel baby, I believe she helped fuel my creative side to start Bek Halliday Art.

What do you enjoy the most about creating your art?

The colours. I like to decorate quite organically with natural tones so It’s fun to use vibrant art as colour explosion. The excitement of seeing an idea develop onto paper, and thinking ‘you know what, that looks alright’ is pretty amazing.

How do you decide what to create, where does your inspiration come from?

For me, inspiration is everywhere. Nature, interiors, art, fashion. Instagram, pinterest and the net are so great for sourcing inspiration.

I don’t want my work process to become ‘stale’ so I am constantly evolving my designs. I like to keep my business moving forward, I think it keeps the work exciting. I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t put 100% passion into it.

What have been the highlights of Bek Halliday Art so far?

Seeing the reaction from others about my work so far. There is just so much love out there, it warms my heart. Creating something that people love just as much as I do…now that’s special.

What advice would you give to those wanting to start their own creative business?

Do what you love. If you don’t put your whole heart into it, it will show.

Where do you see your business in 2 years time?

My own studio where I can freely paint full time, wholesaling to 10+ amazing stores. Hmm..my work in a full spread magazine shoot, or on The Block would feel pretty darn good too!

How would you describe your own personal interior styling style?

I would call it a modern eclectic/scandi beach style if that’s a thing! I like natural materials and soft colours for my furnishings and pops of colour in my wall art.

If you could do anything (business or personal) what would it be and why?

I’d love to be able to have 3...no 6 months off and go on an amazing holiday with my little fam! That would have to be up there!

Name 3 inspirational people that you admire and why?

Ken Done and Miranda Skoczek for their amazing use of colour, any mother running a business! If she wasn't such a nice person I would be jealous LOL. But that's the thing, Carmel is always willing to have a good chat and toss around ideas with fellow stylists in the hope to help them and also better herself in the process.

An avid traveller, I think her inspirations and talent comes from travelling the world and emerging herself in culture and landscapes that excite and spur on the creative juices. She has a keen idea for detail, a love of the organic and there is nothing she wouldn't do the please her every growing list of clients.

So much talent from such a nice person, hope you enjoy our chat!

Tell us a little more about you, your background and your family etc?

Since I was a teenager I’ve had the travel bug! When I turned 18 I took off and spent 7 months travelling USA, Mexico and Europe. I then decided to move to London and then on to Edinburgh, Scotland for 4 years where I worked as a sales rep for a beauty company. When I return I moved to Sydney where I worked as a travel agent and business development manager for a large travel company. Six years ago I moved the Gold Coast where I continued my work as a business development manager and then decided to take the leap into the creative world of interior design, something I’ve had a passion for for many years! I have since discovered my passion for colour consulting, styling and photography and have been lucky enough to work and gain experience in many areas of the creative world including event styling, kitchen design, interior & product styling and colour consulting.

I now live in Currumbin with my partner, Jayden and dog, Bobby!

I started The Styling Collective by Carmel Boyd (previously named Carmel Louise Interior Design & Styling) in 2013.

How did The Styling Collective begin and what challenges did you face in the early days?

The Styling Collective began while I was studying in 2013. I decided to start a blog where I used all the inspiration I found online and through my studies. As I began work experience, I realised I really wanted to be able to work for myself - the dream!

I still feel like I’m in the early days of my business but trying to figure out how I was going to turn my passion into a business was a huge challenge.

Can you tell us what services The Styling Collective can offer?

The Styling Collective offers a full range of Interior Design services including furniture packages and colour consulting. I also offer product, interior, lifestyle, food and property styling & photography, which I absolutely love! I recently launched cost effective Social Media Styling & Photography packages for small businesses. I am a huge believer in the power of social media marketing and supporting small, local businesses and this service aims to provide beautifully styled images of a product or business to ensure the business owner always has quality photography for their audience!

You also operate Penny Lane Eco Soy Candle Co. There are so many creative souls working hard at what they love and I find that so inspiring.

Also seeing my work in print has been amazing, and with some of my favourite work being showcased in the first issue of a local magazine due to launch in September, I’m excited about what’s to come!

Where do you see The Styling Collective in 2 year’s time?

I would love to see more of my work in magazines, editorials and blogs. I am a magazine addict and to open a magazine and see my work in there is really exciting!

I'd also love to have my own design studio and eventually expand my services and continue working with local businesses.

What advice can you offer other people out there wanting to start up their own creative business?

Attending workshops, networking events, weekend courses and doing work experience has been a huge advantage for me. I first met Helen via 7 vignettes probably about 2 years ago and was immediately taken in by her vignette styling of vintage and modern. What I didn't know then, was not only was she a talented stylist, she is an entrepreneur with an amazing career.

Sometimes you cross paths with people in your life that change you and Helen is most certainly one of those people. This is one lady I have the utmost respect for and one of my inspirations I have met through this online world. Also another Adelaide born and bred girl, Helen is fast becoming a well recognised name in our industry.

There is nothing she can't do when she puts her mind to it and she can teach you to live your best life too.

Go make yourself a cuppa and sit back to read about Helen's life and passions as she answers some of my questions like a true professional that she is..

Tell us a little more about you, your background and your family etc?

I grew up in the country in South Australia with my parents and younger sister. I moved to the city to study social work when I was 17. After a 4 year degree I started working in the child protection system as a social worker. It was challenging work and eventually I experienced post traumatic stress from a serious abuse case and became unwell with depression and anxiety. In 2001 I decided to do something with my life for people with diabetes and following a love affair with the then new internet, left my job and started Diabetes Counselling Online. This is now a national charity and I have just completed a 3 year grant from the commonwealth to develop the services. I have 3 sons and having been told when I was 12 and diagnosed with type 1 diabetes that I would never have babies and if I tried they would be most likely still born, they are my greatest creation and joy. I am married to Mr Recycled and we live in the eastern suburbs of Adelaide.

And just because I am an over-sharer and love all the juicy details here are 10 fun facts about me!

I have 3 sons which is pretty amazing considering my type 1 diabetes which I have lived with for 37 years. Pregnancy with type 1 diabetes is tough. I am damn proud of these 3 kids, and myself.I am an eternal optimist, and lover of colour and nature. Some people say I have my head in the clouds sometimes but gee it is gorgeous up there.I make mistakes, lots of them and I worry about what people think of me. I have always had that issue. I am waiting until I grow up to get over it.I DO NOT like large spiders. Just in case you were thinking of showing me any of those on your Instagram feed.I do however LOVE whales, please share them a lot with me.I have lived with depression and anxiety in my past, which was a pretty crap place to be for an optimist. But I got through it and optimism helped. As did mindfulness.I am an acute op shopper (ok addict).I love to share, a lot, about everything. My favourite smell is that of rain.It is the blend of old and new that make my heart skip a beat. It is the creating of things and ideas that helps me makes sense of the world.

What was the drive behind starting your blog, when you clearly had a very busy existing work schedule?

I was burnt out from everything in my life being about diabetes and needed something else. I also needed a creative outlet and wanted to do something for people outside of diabetes.

A passionate and genuine lover of people and planet, I am an eternal optimist and have spent my life helping, nurturing and loving human beings, animals and our earth. My goal is to help you to feel good about yourself, your home and your everyday. I want to inspire you to think before you buy, reduce your waste and lighten your footprint on the planet. I am passionate about living a life that leaves this beautiful planet in a state that allows future generations and other creatures we share the world with, to live long and well. I love creating, designing, homes and interiors. I am also passionate about your health and wellbeing and believe these things can not be separated.

It is about your kids, your parents, your lovers, your friends. Your daily experiences of your home, your business and your life, your health and wellbeing and how we can sustain ourselves, our planet and the other creatures we inhabit it with.

What are some of the services you can offer via Recycled Interiors?

1) Upcycling & Sustainable Styling/Decorating Consults

As a sustainable stylist and decorator, I can offer e-styling and decorating consults for your home or business. This includes mindfulness training, relaxation and stress management strategies, positive visualisation, ACT for wellbeing, Narrative Therapy, healthy eating & activity ideas and how to stay motivated.

In an ACT for Wellbeing consult with me, we will look at whether you have these stories? What is yours called? Does this story get connected with your health and wellbeing, or not? How does this impact on you?

The way we think about and deal with painful thoughts and feelings is very important in being able to live a full and valued life. Our mind is like a problem solving machine! For example we may try to get rid of or “solve” anxiety, sadness, fear, anger, worry or fatigue with things like avoiding social situations; taking medications or drugs or alcohol; eating too much; sleeping; watching too much television etc

However – these things cause short term relief but then start to increase problems in the longer term – for example anxiety gets bigger when someone avoids the situation that caused the initial anxiety.

Developing a clear vision helps you assess your own self care – where is it, where would you like it to be, and is another important part of my sessions with you. I will introduce Mindfulness practices, how to have a vision about your life and your self care, making commitments to yourself, understanding healthy body healthy mind and more.

What challenges did you face in the early days growing Recycled Interiors blog audience, if any, and how did you overcome them?

I think we all face the same challenges, as bloggers – we start out with no audience and we have to work hard to get heard in the huge digital stream of content. I used my existing audience, networked, studied, guest blogged and grew a community around the ideas rather than the actual site, and then start to encourage that audience to come visit.

Challenges include time and money. I overcome them by just doing it as you never get anywhere unless you go for it!

Tell us what a normal day in the life of Helen Edwards is like..

I am a very early riser, between 5 and 6 am. I usually get a lot of work in before 9 am. I have a lot to juggle with my type 1 diabetes every day, so there is about 20 or more blood glucose checks across the day, dealing with high and low blood glucose events, changing my insulin pump every few days, managing my exercise around my diabetes and my related stomach conditions. I also have children with special needs so there are additional tasks for them some days as well as lots of normal everyday kids things. I take a walk/run at least 4 – 5 times a week somewhere in the day. I work until Maxwell is home which on 2 days of the week is tea time. Then after he is bathed and ready for bed I do a bit more work in the evening, usually lighter things like social media. I like to try and get ahead with my blog posts but sometimes that doesn’t happen and I am writing the night before!

What have been the highlights of your business so far? Not only does she produce amazing prints, she is also a talented business woman and I think, a genius at running a small business.

I have personally learnt a great deal from Branka, as I am one of her lucky brand reps. She always has a humerous and ooh so true quote to post on her Instagram account and relishes posting snaps of her prints in customers homes. It is from that type of relationship forgaged with her audience, that she has made One tiny Tribe the success it is today and growing rapidly by the minute.

I adore her prints and love that her range covers adults through to children. Not one to sit quietly by, Branka always has a new product in production and I can't wait to see what she will wow us with next. Read on to discover more about the brains and humour behind One Tiny Tribe....

Tell us a little about your background, family and life in general?

Oh gosh - kicking it off with the personal stuff, ok here goes…

I’m a mum of two and lover (also wife) of one. My kids are at the age where life seems to blur days and nights into one, so I’m constantly running on reserve.

I’m a writer by trade and a closet artists, although I do have a track record of quite a few freelance graphic design projects and one demo album my best friend and I made in the days before children when we were a band.

I speak two languages fluently and am hoping my kids will grow up doing the same.

I love coffee, and by ‘love’ I mean I’m obsessed. My husband is a barista, but I’m not a coffee snob - I can drink it hot, cold, drip, instant, you name it. I avoid decaf, but you know what, if there’s nothing else, I’ll drink that too.

I love great photos, I play the guitar, and my favourite writer is Jodie Picoult.

Where did the name One Tiny Tribe originate from?

A tribe describes a social division in a traditional society, and while it usually consists of families or communities linked by various factors, in our case our little family is the tribe.

In this vast land we call home, we integrate, communicate, and socialise with the beautiful people around us, but we are very much our own little unit.

So when we decided to kick off our own little business, the name came naturally.

Where do the One Tiny Tribe designs come from and do you have a favourite?

From the heart haha - that’s such a cliche thing to say. I mean, they do come from the heart, but they also come from a load of research and feedback.

I’m a strong believer of creating meaningful things that resonate with people or serve a purpose, rather than just putting something on the page for the heck of it. The thing is, art is very subjective - but I always aim to make things with meaning, not just blindly follow trends. And that involves a lot of brainstorming, a lot of feedback, and the ability to say ‘no’ to designs you might love but the research says people probably won’t.

As for a favourite piece, I’d have to go with the “Single Feather”. It’s a print that’s very difficult to highlight in photos, but I often get people writing to me after they’ve bought it telling me how beautiful it is in real life (that puts a huge smile on my face).

Have you always been creative?

I guess I have, but then again I believe that everyone is creative in their own way. The funny thing is I’m actually more of a ‘word girl’ than a ‘picture girl’ - my first passion is writing.

What have been the highlights of One Tiny Tribe been so far?

By far the biggest highlight has been experiencing people like my work. It’s an incredible feeling. There are people all around the world that have my handwriting in their home. There are people who have given my images to their loved ones as gifts. There are children growing up with elements that I put on a page inspiring them to be themselves, to push the limits, to discover their surroundings and who they are. It’s mind-blowing and utterly wonderful!

Another highlight has been ‘meeting’ an array of talented, intelligent, creative, strong women - like yourself, Emma. There are many who have become a part of One Tiny Tribe - in one way or another - and whom, regardless of the fact that I’ve never seen face-to-face, I actually consider my friends.

What advice would you give to those wanting to start their own creative business?

Again, this is going to sound cliche, but: just do it!

A couple of experiences over the past 5 years have made me realise how short life really is. And we get one go at it. So why not give it a crack?

Obviously different types of businesses require a different types of investment. But if you truly can’t stop thinking about it, and if your gut is telling you it’s the right thing to do (I said gut, not mind) then you should just dive on in.

Plus, you can Google just about anything these days, so do some research and then chop chop to it!

One Tiny Tribe has a great social media following, can you share any tips on building your brand on Instagram?

Every business is different, but some common rules definitely apply.

Firstly, you have to choose and know your audience. This seems simple enough, but it’s not. Too often I see people getting carried away by trends and forgetting to take care of their primary audience - who often don’t follow the trends as closely as businesses think they do. This doesn’t mean that you should only cater to one audience, but truly knowing your primary and secondary audience (if you’re starting out I wouldn’t suggest more than that) will help you shape your strategy.

Secondly, having a strategy is super dooper uber useful. I’m not necessarily talking over-detailed business plans, either. I’m talking the basics… You know your audience, so you know what they want to see from you, you know when they want to see it, you know how to engage them, and you know how to communicate with them.

Thirdly, speak to your audience as though you are a brand. Brand language and tone is so incredibly important. And knowing how to talk is, too. Time and time again I see ‘brands’ that talk down to their audience. For instance, they’ll release a product and write nothing more than “I love this new *product* I’ve made. It will be available at 8pm tonight. You’re welcome.” Treating your audience as though they aren't your equals is not a good long-term strategy. It generally doesn’t make you sound like a crash hot human either.

And don’t get discouraged. Every.single.business you see has hit bumps here and there. They have gone through times when they’ve wanted to give up, they have probably been burnt, they have most definitely had their bad days. The only difference between them and those that fall by the roadside is that they keep coming back.

I have plenty more to share, but let’s leave it for another time...

How would you describe your own personal interior styling style?

Non-existent.

Actually, that’s not entirely true.

Since the rise of Instagram stores and Kmart, my interior styling style is very much like my wardrobe - I have some awesome tops, some rad pants, and Converse All Stars in 5 different colours, but none of those items match. Just like I now have all these different bits and bobs that are absolutely stunning, but when you try to put them together they just clash.

But I don’t mind - that’s why I come to people like you, Em, who are incredibly talented at styling.

What would be your dream job?

Stay at home millionaire.

Just kidding. I’d actually love to be a professor one day. I want to pass on my knowledge to people who genuinely want to learn what I have to teach. A PhD is definitely on the cards, just not in the next few years.

Name 3 inspirational people you admire and why?

My mum - because being a mother is by far the hardest - and most rewarding - job in the world and until I had kids I didn’t truly appreciate what an incredible woman my mum is (to have put up with me haha).

Rob Thomas - because he is a lyrical genius.

Nikola Tesla - because he is an unrecognised hero and the greatest inventor to have ever lived. If you’re not familiar with Tesla’s achievements - and you enjoy a well-written piece of work - have a read of this: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/tesla

Just want to say a big thanks Branka for taking the time to share some more about yourself and those great tips about business and brand building.

Make sure you follow One Tiny Tribe on Instagram account @onetinytribeand all her amazing prints can be purchase online via the website www.onetinytribe.com

LC Styling

This week's special guest is my friend Lana Caves from LC Styling here in Brisbane. My background was orginally in Special Events/Marketing and Merchandising, working for a large American lifestyle and beauty brands spanning over 15 years. I learnt so much from the amazing creatives working within these brands. After getting married and having our daughter, I wanted to stay in the same field but at a capacity that would suit family life. Working freelance over the past several years has allowed me to manage my work around my family.

Tell us about LC Styling and what services you offer?

I style within a variety of areas. I style homes for clients who may need a little help and direction with furniture/homewares selection and placement. I style products for companies and retailers, whether it be their retail spaces or their websites and social media accounts. More recently. I have evolved into the world of Magazine Editorials where I am again learning a lot from some very talented people.

Describe your own personal style when it comes to interiors..

My personal style can change on any given day. Some days I feel tropical and coastal and will gather my stash of shells together and start chopping palms outside to bring indoors!. Sometimes minimalistic takes over and I start clearing everything away. Most days however, my style sits happily in the realm of classic, American coastal with lots of shades of blue and white and plenty of striped textiles.

What advice would you give to those wanting to break into the world of interior stying/decorating?

Go hunting for inspiration iin magazines, blogs and social media. Play around and practice until you find your style and discover what you love. Gathering some experience is a great way to find your feet and there are great courses out there too.

Where in Brisbane are your favourite "go too" places for your decorating needs?

I could go on for sentences on this topic!. I collect as I go, I love small businesses I find on Instagram and like the option of pyjama shopping! Paddington Antique Centre is a gem for old and new. My blue and white addiction is supported by Botticelli Housewhere I've acquired most of my pieces from. I also love a good pick up from Freedom, Ikea and K-Mart. So many great peices for every room in the home at those stores.

What are your top 3 decorating pet hates?

Clutter - There is no need to display every knick knack you have ever collected or were gifted, unless of course you are planning on opening your home up as a museum - Declutter and let your pieces tell as clear story together.

Uneven spaces - Vignettes, table styling and wall hangings can take time! So, take the that time and check everything is aligned and spaced evenly.

Toilet Mats - Nooo!

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

I get a kick out of seeing any of my styling pics pop up in editorials, blogs or even a simple re-gram by someone on Instagram! Probably the career highlight in my current work situation, is now being involved in styling for Interior Magazines.

Where do you see yourself and LC Styling in 2 year's time?

I hope to have expanded my styling portfolio and to have really progressed in styling for magazine editorials.

If you were not a Stylist, what else do you think you would like to be?

Maybe a travel and food photographer/writer. I am consumed with the travel bug constantly and am lucky that my family gets to travel thanks to my husbands work. I'm that annoying family member clutching a camera constantly capturing what is happending around us. My daughter likes to write about her day and the city she is visiting when we travel. I love that she does that, perhaps she'll be a travel writer!

Who are you top 3 favourite stylists/designers and why?

Aerin Lauder - I love where she has taken her Grandmother's (Estee Lauder) vision for the EL comapny. She is a smart businesswoman, mum and wife and I love her personal style: classic and naturally elegant. I joined Estee Lauder Corporation as a very eager 17 year old student and continued to spend 9 wonderful years there learning and progressing. They taught me so much

Ralph Lauren - Much like Aerin, I love Ralph Lauren for this timeless and class approach to fashion and interiors. RL interiors can be diverse. I particularly love his use of blues and coastal elements. Again, I'm lucky that I was able to take away much knowledge from the Ralph lauren brand after years of working for them also.

India Hicks - The Queen of coastal and tropical interiors!. Life just keeps me busy and I never really seem to stay still, unless I am at the movies or editing at my desk! I come from a large family of 7 kids – 5 girls, 2 boys – including two sets of twins of which I have a twin brother. There is always something happening and it’s the best.

Have you always wanted to be a photographer and what did you do to achieve this role?

I always enjoyed taking photographs, but didn’t really pursue it until I was in my twenties. After studying at university, I took a break before returning to complete my degree in 2012. The passion was renewed and I discovered a love of photographing my beloved interiors. I love fashion photography and would love to incorporate more of that...

Do you have a favourite “subject” you like to photograph?

Interiors – especially those with lots of texture, fabulous light and wonderful quirky style. Waiting for the right light and having an amazing vignette in the frame for your eye to follow throughout the image –it’s exciting!

Have you ever been asked to photograph something that you really just don’t like? How did you overcome this?

I suppose weddings are something that I don’t LOVE shooting. There is a lot of pressure, and if you’re not ‘on your game’, it is not something you can reshoot on a better day. I only do weddings for close friends – there are so many amazing photographers who specialise in this area, so I tend to steer away from this unless I have the right feeling...

You must have seen some amazing interiors and insight into people lives whilst taking your photo’s, has there been a highlight?

People’s homes are always amazing. They’re so unique and filled with such personality – definitely an insight into the livesof others. It is always an honour to be invited into somebody’s home because it’s their personal space. On a recent trip to Sydney, I took a tour of the Elizabeth Bay House as part of the Sydney Living Museums. It was stunning! For the most part, I was the only one on the tour, so the guide was very undererstanding of me taking photographs. The lighting was a challenge, but it was full of such rich history

and some of the finest interiors that it was one of the most exciting ‘shoots’ –definitely a highlight.

What advice would you give to those wanting to be a photographer?

Whilst I believe some people have a natural talent, it is wise to have some education/theoretical understanding where skills can be gained – not necessarily a university degree, but a reputable design/photography school/college is suitable. And find a mentor, or someone who will take you on as an assistant/intern, to gain some valuable skills in both photography and business – very helpful and practical.

What is one of the best things you like about your chosen career?

I love meeting new people, and being in places where I can take photographs that make me so excited to capture something so visually stunning. It is such an amazing feeling when it does happen!

Where do you see yourself in 2 year’s time?

Still photographing, but perhaps more of a larger part of my life than just a sideline. That’s the goal anyway...

If you were not a photographer, what else do you think you would like to be?

An Interior Designer or graphic designer – I love typography. If I could sew, I would have loved to be a Fashion Designer... Something creative anyway...

Name 3 inspirational people that you admire and why?

Cindy Sherman – her methods, style, and unique imagery were my first love in university. Seeing one of her pieces at a gallery in New York was just one of those O-M-G moments.

Megan Morton - She is so giving, caring, and full of so much energy and wisdom. It is always a pleasure attending workshops and instameets hosted by The School. Megan is an inspiration.

Corinne Day – She was a pioneer of the gritty, raw imagery of the 90’s – the beginning of Kate Moss - her images were life in action, life as it was, as it was happening. That’s the kind of images I like to take – real, un-posed.

Thanks so much Trina for allowing us to take a sneak peak into your world of photography. Not only is she a fabulous Interior Stylist and Professional Organiser she has now branched out in Food Styling.

Her company "Sarah's House" has also introduced Adelaide Shopping Tourswhich have proven to be a huge success and a testament to Sarah's highly sort after advice and style influence within the industry. Read on to see what it is like in the life of a professional organiser and stylist..

Tell us more about you, your background and your family..

I am one of seven, we grew up in a tiny country town called Warooka, South Australia. I am married to Matthew, a country boy aswell and we have four children, twin girls, 20, and two boys, 17 and 15. Happily living in Adelaide but enjoy our visits to both farms as an escape!

Have you always been an organised person or is this something that has evolved as you have matured?

Well it was hard being organised sharing a room with four sisters, all with very different personalities! Whenever my kids ask for their own room I remind them of what I had to endure!

I craved my own personal space and sort of got this at boarding school with my own tiny little cupboard! But my real love of organising came when I started having children of my own, four under five years and quickly realised that order was needed to stay sane and calm!

Please explain a little more about how 'Sarahs House' came to be and what services you offer?

After helping friends and family organise their homes and then seeing an episode of 'Oprah' with her Professional Organiser Peter Walsh on one day, I realised that there was such a thing as Professional Organising, I had my Oprah 'ah ha' moment! I immediately did all the research I could, discovered AAPO, Australian Association of professional organisers, signed up and attended their next conference.

I offer de cluttering, organising and styling services.

What challenges did you face in the early days of growing the business 'Sarahs House' and how did you overcome these?

I was really unaware of how powerful social media is in growing your business and really didn't use it at the start. My business just grew through word of mouth and a couple of lucky press releases which I'm very thankful for.

What have been the highlights so far?

Finding Instagram! Such a positive way to share and grow your business. Connecting with other like minded people, all encouraging each other which is just wonderful.

Through Instagram I have found a real love of styling shots, flatlays, and have in particular found a real love of food styling which has lead me to some great work opportunities and expanding my business in areas that I wasn't prepared for but am absolutely loving!

I am really proud of just giving it go, getting out of my comfort zone and seeing where it all may lead, and the connections and friendships I have made along the way.

Where do you see Sarahs House in two years?

Hopefully just bigger, better and a bit more polished!

I have recently starting another side to my business in running organised shopping tours around Adelaide, showcasing all the wonderful stores Adelaide has to offer. I would love to develop these further and take them to the Barossa etc, too much fun!

So what's a normal day for you like when helping a client declutter and organise their home and life?

An early start with a car load of organising materials ready to utilise their spaces more. My car is usually jam packed full on the first day of a new client, full of containers, boxes and of course my trusty labeller!! I don't like stopping once we start and I'm absolutely exhausted, but so satisfied at the end of the day with the change we have made!

You obviously have a talent for interior styling as well, how would you describe your personal interior style at home?

My home is a calm, modern Australian interior with a definate nod to all things Scandinavian. I love neutrals in my home, with the six of us, neutrals and simplicity calms me, and hopefully everyone else!

If you weren't styling and organising, what else would you love to do and why?

It would have to be something that involves organisation so maybe a librarian! I would have loved to have studied architecture and I'm also always dreaming of owning my own organising type store...basket heaven!

Please share with us your top 3 'must do things' to organise our homes? Where are your go to places to buy storage solutions?

1.Zone your home into definite areas to reduce clutter. Be very strict as to what you allow into these zones, once lines are blurred, clutter creeps in! ( eg; kitchen bench is in the kitchen for a reason, not in the study! Bills, notices etc don't belong there!)

2. Invest in good baskets.

3. Do a 5 minute tidy up at the end of every day to start the day fresh.

My favourite places to buy storage solutions are currently Kmart, amazing products!! Ikea for all the trusty basic pieces.

Name two of your favourite places to travel to in the world and one that is on your wish list,

NEW YORK.... I dream of living there in a beautiful, industrial, minimal, stylish apartment. It's such an amazing, friendly city with so many wonderful things to offer. Take me back!

New Zealand.... So incredibly beautiful, I also dream of a little cottage, minimal and gorgeous, Grand Designs style with a Scandinavian feel overlooking Lake Tekapo.

I absolutely must visit Finland, the home or Marimekko and take it all in, then finish the trip with the spectacular Northern Lights.

Thank you so much Sarah for allowing us a sneak peak into your fabulous life.

You are an inspiration to me and many others out there and I can't wait to see what Sarah's House has installed for us next!

If you want to declutter and organised your life better contact Sarah here at Sarahs House and follow her journey sarahshanahan_lifestyleon Instagram and you can also check out her facebook page here.

Home Staging Brisbane

This week I had a little chat to fellow Brisbane girl Imogen Brown from Home Staging Brisbane. She is the staging diva of Brisbane and is booked out nearly all the time. One of the most impressive things I love about Imogen is her ability to give out her advice and experience to other stagers/stylists in the hope of boosting the industry. Not afraid of competition (she has a quiet confidence) she is always there to lend a helping hand and feels that the more people know and respect home staging the better it will be for everyone. She has a very good point.

In an industry that is now booming, it wasn't always like that for Imogen but with hard work and persistance her efforts paid off. Home Staging Brisbane is one of the leading property staging companies here in Brisbane and Imogen can now finally be assured that her business is here to stay..

Tell us a little more about you, your background and your family etc?

I moved to Brisbane from London in 2006 with my husband and 3 kids. My kids were young when we moved and now have morphed seemingly overnight into 2 teenage girls and a 10 year old boy. My background is in Advertising. I spent a fabulous 10 years in London working in the media departments of top advertising agencies. When kids started arriving I re-trained as a business coach. I did this until our move to Australia. After arriving my job was settling everyone in and training for a marathon (bucket list, gladly now ticked off). Then my Mum died quite suddenly and the inevitable re-evaluation that followed led me into home staging. I’ve always loved interiors and real estate, love helping people, being my own boss and being creative plus I needed a job that was flexible around my kids.

I started my business in 2011 at exactly the same time as the floods in Brisbane. The worst timing.

Where did your interest in real estate and interiors come from? Has it always been there?

I remember wanting to be an interior designer when I was still at school (I was dating an architecture student at the time!) but chucked that idea when I realised it was going to be more about building and specifications than throwing a few cushions around.

I’ve always been interested in real estate. Pre internet, I couldn’t walk past a real estate office without looking in the window and even now I check realestate.com every day. Not just for my work but because I’m interested in what’s on the market.

I was never that child who decorated her own bedroom, never really the student who transformed her digs, but when I bought my first house with my husband we decorated together and still have some of the items we bought over 20 years ago. Give me an interiors magazine though or program on TV or an instagram feed full of luscious interiors and I could get lost for hours - even after a day selecting interiors at the furniture warehouse.

Please explain a little more about what “Home Staging” involves..

Home Staging is simply the merchandising of a property before it lists in order to capture the hearts and offers of potential buyers. No one lives in a magazine shoot but everyone’s property can look its best come sale time. I help sellers show their property at its best so that they sell quickly for a great price.

There is certainly more talk about home staging in the media these days, are you finding more people are engaging of the idea of staging their property for sale?

Yes I think they are. I think many people though still see home staging or property styling as just putting hire furniture into empty houses. It is this but it’s also so much more - from bathroom upgrades, exterior re-paint, re-arranging furniture and storing a lot away. It can be a simple 2 hour consult to a full reno and staging costing thousands of dollars.

Would most of your business come from the real estate professionals or home sellers needing some help?

Although I have some great relationships with a number of agents who give me business most of my business still comes from home owners direct. There are still many agents who see a house as a commodity to be sold. If they drop the price by $30k to get the sale their commission is hardly affected. That same $30k equity means a lot to the sellers. I don’t need to ‘sell’ this to my clients. They get it.

What would a typical day be like when you are staging a home?

I have 3 typical days!

Day 1: Consults and measures. This could be a day spent giving a home staging consultation or measuring for hire furniture and often a bit of both

Day 2: Selecting furniture. My favorite day as this is where I get to be most creative pulling a look together for a whole house and working with what’s at the furniture warehouse (or often what’s not at the warehouse!) on the day I’m selecting.

Day 3: Install day. I meet the delivery truck, oversee the furniture going in then style the property ready for photos.

No two days are the same as no two houses are the same. I love that aspect of my job.

What challenges did you face in the early days growing Home Staging Brisbane and how did you overcome these?

How about no business for the first 6 months! It was slow, so slow.

My husband sat me down at one point and said ‘this seems to be a lot of effort for not much reward.’ I can’t explain it but I just refused to give up. I set myself daily tasks, treated it like a job and slowly the business started coming in. 4 years later and I’m earning good money and I’m booked out the majority of the time.

You would have seen a great deal of houses in your profession, is there one in particular that stands out in your memory and why?

Yes, a house that had been on the market on and off for 5 years and wasn’t selling. My client rang and told me “you’re my last resort”. No pressure then! The house, when I first saw it was a heart sinker. Too much to do - every room a different color, overgrown garden, timber kitchen, dated furniture. My clients did exactly what I told them and I added in some hire furniture as the final piece. The house sold within weeks. The houses that stick in my memory aren’t the multi million dollar ones. They are the ‘heart sinker’ houses that I turn around, make beautiful and sell so that my clients can move on - literally and emotionally.

Where do you see your business in 2 years time?

Hmm, good question. I love what I do. I could grow my business but just because you can grow a business doesn’t mean that you should. What I’ve created is perfect for where I am in my life right now. So, I’ll answer, more of the same : )

You obviously have a talent for interior styling as well, how would you describe your personal interior style at home?

I’m English so I love that whole British Colonial style, with Australian country and a bit of industrial thrown in too. Anything that has a story or patina. My house is a Queenslander. It’s a work in progress. It’s a family house. I pour a lot of love into my client’s houses so my house suffers sometimes and that’s OK. As long as I have my family and my health, a hot shower, a warm bed and food in the fridge (my kids will laugh at that one), I have a home.

If you weren’t Home Staging, what else would you love to do and why?

I would have a shop. I’d call it Patina and sell old stuff. I’d take regular shopping trips to England with my husband.

Please share with us the top 5 “must do things” to prepare your home for sale..

1. Move out emotionally before you start the process

2. Be objective. Your house is a house to be merchandised. It’s no longer your home

3. My husband runs his own construction company where I work 1 day a week as well as run my blog and shop.

How did you come up with the name “The Stylist Splash”?

It was actually my daughter who chose the name. She came up with the idea of having a splash of daily styling and there it was born.

Did you decide one day to become a professional blogger or was it something that evolved over time?

It has actually evolved over time. With no intention of it actually becoming as big as it is. I just wanted a place to share all the lovely things I come across and it has grown from there.

What challenges did you face in the early days growing The Stylist Splash audience and how did you overcome them?

I didn’t really have any challenges as I had no expectations. I was just photographing things I love and putting it all on the blog. I had no idea that I was growing at a rapid rate and that people loved what I do.

Tell us what a normal day in the life of The Stylist Splash is like..

Well I normally do all the boring house chores first. Kids off to school and all that stuff. Then by the afternoon I dedicate an hour or 2 to the blog before school pickup. I read my emails, gather inspiration from other blogs and prepare my posts and plan my instagram photos. Not that exciting but I try to squeeze in as much as I can in that time.

What have been the highlights of The Stylist Splash so far? What are you the most proud of?

I am proud of all my magazine exposure. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that what I style would be good enough to go to print. I am also proud of my latest achievement in Home Beautiful Magazine. My son’s bedroom is a finalist in the top 50 most beautiful room and I had a photographer and stylist come to the house. I was so proud of that moment and to see his bedroom in print was so exciting.

What advice would you give to those wanting to start their own blog?

Work hard and stay true to yourself. So many people want a piece of you and for nothing ( sorry a bit of negativity) choose wisely who you want to work with and the rest will fall in to place.

Where do you see The Stylist Splash in 2 year’s time?

I’m not really sure. Maybe just plodding along doing the same thing, I don’t really know as you know I have not really thought about this. As it has grown so quickly, sometimes I can barely keep up. Best I do a business plan (lol).

You obviously have a talent for styling, how would you describe your personal interior style at home?

I love colour ( as you can tell from my IG) but I also love a mix of contemporary and classic style. Gosh I don;t know, I love anything new on the shops but not to modern or minimal. Minimal is definitely something I can’t do.

If you weren’t styling and blogging, what else would you love to do and why?

I’d love to open a little café and serve homemade goodies and good coffee. I would love to do this one day, but I’ll wait till the kids are older and I can dedicate my whole time to it.

Do you have a favourite quote or inspirational mantra that you love and if so what is it?

I love positive quotes but don’t really have a favourite. Work hard, be nice is what I say to my kids that’s about all.

Just want to say a big thanks to Yvette for taking the time out of her busy schedule to have a chat to me about The Stylist Splash.. Now we all know how crazy good Byron is at producing amazing creatives.. well Laksmi is no exception.

The creator behind these woven handmade crosses, she is as refreshing as the designs themselves. Laksmi takes old school creative art and blends with modern colour palettes and appeal. Think Bohemian and Mexican with a modern twist. End result is a unique handmade piece of art which is perfect hung from the ceiling, placed on a wall or even used in plant pots and vignettes.

Copper and Cross is soon to be stocked in retailers but for now Laksmi sells her creations via her website www.copperandcross.com.au and you can also follow her creative journer on Instagram here..

Tell us a little about your background?

Before starting Copper and Cross my main interest (and torment) was creative writing. It’s all I had ever imagined doing vocationally but strangely, directly alongside my sense of fulfillment and purpose was a wearying feeling of guilt and pressure – the unfinished stories, the juggle between inhabiting the physical world and the intangible/storyteller world, especially as a mother – led me to pursue a more physically creative outlet (which I had no idea I was capable of!).

I had actually set out to make a plant hanging but on a whim and a whimsy I got out some paddle pop sticks (yep, the prototype!) and made a “God’s Eye”. The cross shape grew around it, as did everything else.

Where did the name Copper and Cross originate from?

The name (my name) “Laksmi” was suggested to me by a few and was the frontrunner for a while. Technically I could see the appeal but it was a bit cringe for me. Growing up in the hippy place, with the hippy name, the hippy parents, on the hippy commune has been a strange beast. Without going into detail, certain practices done in the name of spirituality had caused me to have a difficult relationship with it all.

I try to strive for genuineness in all aspects of my life. I pour love into my products. I pour good intention. I honour the tradition of the product I make. But I didn’t feel comfortable ascribing my name, my background to the brand.

In the end, I was forced to suddenly decide and it just came out. I make crosses. I use copper. I liked the C alliteration. Great.

Do you have a favourite product you enjoy making?

I have a new favourite every week! It usually depends on what orders I’ve just had – it’s always satisfying to rotate through a range of styles. I LOVE when I start to see the patterns become a whole. It’s still a shock every time – oh, that worked again! And adorning …. Feathers, copper, pom poms – that’s a lot of fun.

Have you always been creative?

I mentioned already I was very invested in creative writing but was positive I lacked a visually creative capability. The first thing I set out to make with my hands (about a year ago) was a pallet coffee table. I figured that it WAS possible to learn the skills required. I was determined. I’m a tiny woman – look more like a small child, but I trawled the Industrial neighborhood, dragged pallets home, sanded, borrowed my step-dads drill, stained, got glass cut and I made the exact table I’d set out to make. I think that experience made me fall in love with creating, with seeing something tangibly come together.

What have been the highlights of Copper and Cross so far?

There are highlights that have been a success for the business and highlights that have been a success for me personally. Anytime there is any feedback on our products – that’s a highlight. It’s an honour every time somebody chooses our products; to have them beautify their house with it, to make people happy and feel that resonance.

To have people love what you love to do is an expanding, humbling experience.

It’s a very vulnerable-making venture – putting your passion and labour on display, you really have to get over yourself, but making yourself vulnerable (and I felt this magnified when becoming a mother) is like some kind of gateway to feeling connected to the world. It floods in.

We are still so new so the milestones for us may not seem like much to others but it was a great first high to be featured on Interiors Addict’s fab 4, and a hugely validating experience to have our first stockist reach out to us (will be revealed soon!). Also, to have businesses behind us like Spell and GLOTATTS is 100.

What advice would you give to those wanting to start their own creative business?

I honestly had no idea I was going down this path when I started out. (crazy side story – but I saw a psychic last year who said she saw all of this unfold and at the time I wrote her off because she said she saw me making things with my hands (no lady!) and now actually EVERYTHING she said has come true. Freaky).

I’m assuming the best thing to do is a ton of market research, a business course or at least write a business plan, and build your empire like a pro.

For me though, I made something I thought looked cool, showed a friend, and with her business/entrepreneur background she blessed it into existence and now I trust my instincts and heckle my business savvy friends on the daily. Whenever I feel self-doubt or weighed down by the business side, I go back to the beginning, I sit down and weave, and whether it’s the creation or the meditative aspect, I can always access the confidence in the business I need afterwards.

Where do you see yourself in 2 years time?

Oh man, the dreaded question! I’d say I hope to pretty much be doing the same as now. Except Illy will be 4 (what!), the business will be 2 and I’ll be 30 … so hopefully all three have healthily and happily grown. And if I could really choose – I’d be back in NYC for my 30th.

How would you describe your own personal interior styling style?

Instead of trying to sound like I know what I’m talking about and have you find out I don’t know what I’m talking about, I’ll just list things I like. Plants, white, industrial, copper, comfy, comfy, comfy things, and all the cool stuff I’ve collected in between. Some of my favourite items in the house are a huge black resin rabbit girl, an old school map that details the division of The Treaty of Versailles, my healthy fiddle leaf, my incredibly soft, pastelly pink/purple stool beside my bed with another great guy – cactus – on top, and an ironic figurine of an Indian with a slung gun riding a horse.

What would be your dream job?

Oh gosh, another tough one! I love running my own business and using my hands, creating things for people’s homes – so I can’t imagine I’d ever want to trade in what I’m doing right now. Also, this is going to sound corny and the jury is still out on whether this is a “job” or not, but honestly being a mum is just the greatest, most soul satisfying thing I have done or can imagine doing. It IS obvious and it is maybe an easy answer but it’s also true. As good as people say becoming a parent is – it’s better. It’s crazily, unbelievably good.

Name 3 inspirational people that you admire and why?

So, I was an odd child and all of my heroes were fictional. If you have ever read The Clan of the Cave Bear, then you know all the unusual names my childhood pets had the fortune of having.

Ayla, you’re still my number one girl, but if we have to move from the make-believe, I would list the inspiring people that I personally know. My good friend Sophie, from @tribeintow– entrepreneurial queen and blesser of Copper and Cross, my other beautiful friend Angie from @foreversoles– I have witnessed her dedication and hard work and love that she has grown a business based on an industry that suits her down to the ground, and thirdly, my super savvy, super hasn’t changed since high school, super doesn’t need sleep, crazily busy, motivated friend, Mitch from @designtwins.

Thanks so much Laksmi for your honest and refreshing account of your life and business. I thoroughly enjoyed find out more about you and your approach to your work. Juggling motherhood and career is no easy task but your cool approach to life makes it seem enjoyable and obtainable. My mum has been my inspiration, she has taught me how to sew and create. She is one special talented lady who I admire a lot.

Throughout my school years I loved Art class, Visual Arts and Wood Work, they were my favourite subjects. I loved drawing, painting, sewing and working on design briefs.

After finishing school in 2009 I gained a Traineeship in Business Administration at an Architect firm. From there I have worked in Administration and Reception jobs.

I currently work full time at Workspace Australia, a non for profit business that provides Business Incubator Centres throughout Regional Victoria. I love working with Small Business with their social media and website design. I work on the Jlee brand part time, before and after work and weekends.

I have a very busy schedule, a lot of planning is required to get everything done.

How and why was Jlee Textiles created?

Jlee was born in 2013. I started making gift cards, which then turned into creating jewellery, bags and accessories. It all changed a bit when I attended a Screen Printing course at Harvest Textiles (now Home Work), I was instantly hooked! The whole concept from design, stencil making to printing then sewing, to see the final product is amazing!

With printing you can play around with designs/colour combos. I always surprise myself at how each print comes out, each print is totally unique and one of a kind. That’s what I love about it!

After mastering the art of Screen Printing, I started creating cushions and bags finally finding my niche. I am always creating and designing new products for the Jlee Collection (in my spare time!!)

What do you enjoy the most about Jlee Textiles?

Being in the studio printing designs, I love being able to create one of a kind prints. Love working with colour, mixing the inks to create different tones. I just LOVE being in the studio playing..

Where do you get your inspiration for your designs?

From everyday objects and patterns. Flicking through magazines and looking through Pantone colour chips.

What have been the highlights of your career so far?

Oh... so many to choose from! I am blessed everyday by the support I receive. I couldn’t just pick one highlight.

What advice would you give to those wanting to start their own creative business?

Just start, find your niche, love what you do! No point wasting your life in a day job that you can’t stand, find your WHY and go for it. Yeah... you will have lows and highs in running a business but the highs are what push you along to better yourself and your business.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

I am only a spring chicken (22) so I have so many exciting plans for the future hopefully in 5 years time… I will have my dream warehouse/studio working full time on the Jlee brand. Running screen printing & sewing workshops, printing beautiful pieces for customers and stores across Australia and beyond.

How would you describe your own personal interior styling style?

I love the colour blue, such a calming colour. So I would say a beachy style.

If you could do anything (business or personal) what would it be and why?

To create my own homewares/gift shop with a printing studio. I am working hard to make that dream come true.

Name 3 inspirational people that you admire and why?

- Harvest Textiles (now known as Home Work) – I love their work!! Their studio space and shop is amazing, a must see! I learnt to Screen Print by attending one of their workshops.

- Raw Styling – Emma is such an inspiration with her ability to style! We had both travelled down from Queensland to Sydney to attend our first Workshop at ISCD. At the time we were both studying the Certificate IV in Colour and Design and were keen to learn more. We had never met prior to this and have not met in person again since this time. However, in the world of social media, Jill and I have foraged our careers side by side and watched each other grow..

I would never had imagined that a 2 day meeting would turn into a wonderful friendship nearly 2 years later. Funny enough at the time Jill and I had never heard of Instagram and really didn't know where this new creative path would take us. Fast forward 2 years and Jill has created a beautiful, inspiring business called Sari Jane Home Accents. She is also still working in the family business "Corbett Homes" and raising 4 amazing boys, so she is one busy lady.

Jill took some time out of her hectic schedule to answer some questions for me about Sari Jane and to give and insight into owning an online shop...

Tell us a little about your background and the creation of Sari Jane Home Accents:

The story behind Sari Jane probably started 16 years ago. Over that time I developed and nurtured our family business, Corbett Homes, while developing our house into a home. Any chance I had you’d find me scouring homeware stores from the city to eccentric outback towns looking for kitchen essentials and gorgeous homewares. Then one day I realised I was no longer content with delighting in the details of my own home. I wanted to bring to others a collection of thoughtful essentials for the kitchen and the table, handpicked items that would enrich your gatherings Australia-wide, with all these homewares available online.

But the story probably started well before that. It really comes from my own experiences as a child. Growing up in a quaint cottage on the top of a mountain range, far from civilisation, in a small town called Eungella, which means ‘the land of the clouds’, this is when I learned the art of gatherings and homemaking.

Setting the dinner table was a ceremonial experience. Dinner itself was a time for family. Fun was found in simple pleasures like growing vegetables, cutting fresh flowers from the garden, foraging and exploring the natural world. In this digital age, the opportunity to get together with friends and family, within the comfort of our own homes, is something I hold sacred.

What do you enjoy the most about Sari Jane?

The excitement of receiving new stock into our headquarters will never fade! We also adore our styling and photoshoot days. But nothing quite beats the interactions that we have with our customers, and the beautiful heartfelt messages we get from them when they receive our goods. That, warms the heart.

How do you decide what wares to stock in Sari Jane?

A table holds memories of love, laughter, shared meals and inspiring conversations. It is the focal point of every gathering I’ve ever hosted. And to style a table for a gathering of loved ones is a beautiful way to celebrate those special bonds. We have an insatiable passion for tableware, we have a keen eye for wood, or organic products, we are drawn to handmade ceramics. Products that make these gatherings unique, beautiful and satisfying are what we desire as part of the Sari Jane Story.

What have been the highlights of Sari Jane so far?

Just last week we introduced handmade wooden spoons to Sari Jane Home Accents – an Australian exclusive!

Handmade in London using English and American walnut wood, these spoons will make a welcome addition at your next dinner party, high tea, or even at the breakfast table.

Each of these handmade wooden spoons are unique, with variations in the grain, colour and size giving each spoon its own character. All handmade wooden spoons are sanded to a smooth finish and dipped in linseed oil and beeswax to preserve and protect them.

What advice would you give to those wanting to start their own creative business?

If you can’t stop thinking about it, don’t stop working for it.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

I would love to own a brick and mortar shop one day. But right now, the time is not right.

How would you describe your own personal interior styling style?

Subtle Scandinavian with a hint of industrial!

If you could do anything (business or personal) what would it be and why?

What I am doing right now.

Name 3 inspirational people that you admire and why?

Cindy Chen is a Melbourne based freelance stylist and photographer, specialising in food, product and lifestyle photography. I am in awe of her style and her photography.

Beth Kirby who gathers and wanders while making, cooking, and styling while exploring the art of simple living. I covet her style.

Kara Rosenlund celebrates a love for authenticity and adventure through the eye of her camera. Her styling is stunning, and not that I have ever met her, but we have crossed paths through social media avenues and I believe she is simply a lovely person.

Thanks so much Jill for allowing us into your world and the wonderful experience that is...

How to renovate a kitchen for under $500

Are you over your 80's kitchen but don't have the budget for a full scale re model? If your cabinetry and benchtop is in good condition, I have the perfect solution for you. If you don't have a phobia to a bit of elbow grease and a few days up your sleeve, read on to see how your kitchen can look new and modern again........

1. Start with removing all furniture hardware from your cabinets/drawers, so you dont get paint on them

2. It's best to give the cabinets and drawers a quick clean with purpose made Laminate Cleaner available at Bunnings, or warm water to remove any grease residue

3. Now it's time to give them a very light sand with fine sandpaper. This helps the primer stick to the original surface

4. Time to prime the cabinetry now. Give a generous coat (I preferred to use a roller where I could) and allow to fully dry before appling paint.

5. Choose your paint colour. You will be using White Knight Laminate Paint which has a selection of colours available. However, I have discovered that most Dulux paints can be coloured match. Please ask for assistance with staff at the hardware store before deciding. Some colours may not be compatable.

6. Now the fun stuff, start painting!. I found using a small roller gave me better results than a paint brush. I did use a small brush for the fiddly sections around the hinges. If you have a steady hand, no need to tape up hinges.

7. I painted both the exterior and interior of the doors for full affect

8. It will take a full 24 hours drying time before you can apply the second coat. Please note that while the paint is drying, no drawers or cupboards should be closed, that's a given, but also the paint takes up to 5 days to cure, so gentle use is advised for a few days following. I ended up doing three coats on my drawers and cupboards but you may be satisfied with two. Its a personal choice and really depends on the colour choice.

9. Once completely dry, add back on all your hardware or you may like to change these for a new look also.

10. Stand back and admire your new kitchen! As this is paint, it will be proned to chip, so make sure you have some left over for little touch ups along the way. I also decided to change my splashback and tile over the glass....
