Bek Halliday Art

Today my special guest is a very talented abstract artist and illustrator Bek Halliday. Living on the central coast of Australia with two young girls, Bek juggles motherhood and her creative pursuits with a passion for all that is colour and with a distinct uniqueness.

I first became familiar with Bek's work when it was highlighted to me on Instagram. I will admit that a stick man is about the pinnacle of my drawing/artistic talent which is why I am in awe of Bek's abstract paintings and detailed illustrations.

Bek Halliday art is fast becoming recognised throughout the art and interiors world and that comes as no surpirse to me. Read on to find out a little more about this talent and down to earth artist..

Tell us a little about your background and your life?

I’m happily married to an exceptionally supportive man and the love of my life. We married quite young, I was 22 and next year is our 10 year wedding anniversary which is just crazy thinking about it! We have been blessed with two gorgeous little girls who I am grateful for every day. We live in a coastal town in Australia and we love it. I have to live near the beach.

Have you always been the creative type and interested in art?

I have always been creating something since I was a kid, so it’s always been a part of who I am. It’s kind of like my release, painting relaxes me and lets me just get lost in the moment.

When was Bek Halliday Art started and did you face any challenges or hurdles along the way?

I come from a background in Homewares, Fashion and Visual Merchandising and studied Fine Art when I left school, but it wasn’t until I was pregnant with my second child that I felt a sudden urge and desperate need to return to art. She’s a wise little soul! I call her my angel baby, I believe she helped fuel my creative side to start Bek Halliday Art.

What do you enjoy the most about creating your art?

The colours. I like to decorate quite organically with natural tones so It’s fun to use vibrant art as colour explosion. The excitement of seeing an idea develop onto paper, and thinking ‘you know what, that looks alright’ is pretty amazing.

How do you decide what to create, where does your inspiration come from?

For me, inspiration is everywhere. Nature, interiors, art, fashion. Instagram, pinterest and the net are so great for sourcing inspiration.

I don’t want my work process to become ‘stale’ so I am constantly evolving my designs. I like to keep my business moving forward, I think it keeps the work exciting. I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t put 100% passion into it.

What have been the highlights of Bek Halliday Art so far?

Seeing the reaction from others about my work so far. There is just so much love out there, it warms my heart. Creating something that people love just as much as I do…now that’s special.

What advice would you give to those wanting to start their own creative business?

Do what you love. If you don’t put your whole heart into it, it will show.

Where do you see your business in 2 years time?

My own studio where I can freely paint full time, wholesaling to 10+ amazing stores. Hmm..my work in a full spread magazine shoot, or on The Block would feel pretty darn good too!

How would you describe your own personal interior styling style?

I would call it a modern eclectic/scandi beach style if that’s a thing! I like natural materials and soft colours for my furnishings and pops of colour in my wall art.

If you could do anything (business or personal) what would it be and why?

I’d love to be able to have 3...no 6 months off and go on an amazing holiday with my little fam! That would have to be up there!

Name 3 inspirational people that you admire and why?

Ken Done and Miranda Skoczek for their amazing use of colour, any mother running a business! It’s a tough gig!
